Does social identify theory still apply today?
In pervious time periods social identify was something that was strongly recognised, it was easy to be able to see the type of music that someone listened to due to what they were wearing. The type of music that you listened to also determined the type of social group that you belonged to, everyone knew what you were into and certain groups where juged or hated due others to their music interests. However this is no longer dominant now a days and music has become a lot more diverse, however we still have some stereotypes.
Stereotypes:
- Hippies- They are seen to be always funky colours like purples, with massive glasses on. They are seen to be wearing a peace sign or have one in their Volkswagen.
- Skinheads- These are seen to always be wearing dc martins with braces on, thigh jeans and a fitted white top.
- Mods- Around during the 60s they were called the modernists as they listened to modern Jazz. They would always be seen driving moto scooters.
- Gangsters- Gangsters were stereotypes to listen to R and B music, they were always thought to be involved in crime and went around in large gangs.
- Emos/Goths- This is one of the only types of stereotypes that is strongly dominant today, they are seen to listen to Rock and heavy metal. Like the picture above they have died red or jet black hair, and wear black clothes a lot of the time.
- Fangirls- Associated with pop these are usually teenage girls that go mad for certain bands or people. They go crazy for the artists that they love on social media and at concerts.
From the stereotypes mentioned above Emos/Goths are still dominant today as however they do not go to he extremes that people have done in pervious years, like beating someone up due to them not liking the same music tastes. Fangirls have come abut more now a days due to social media growing and growing. Gangsters are still around however it depends in the area that you are in as they would not be in all areas like fangirls are.

Why I like Billboard Magazine

Billboard is an american magazine which covers a wide spectrum of music artists ranging from Beyonce, Kayne West or Lady Gaga. Billboard is easily identifiable to the reader through its use of logo; billboard use bright colours such as lime green and yellow to contrast against the warm colours of the background. The simple layout and white from differ greatly from standard magazine conventions such as tag lines as shown by Ray Gun. Billboard have included a clear colour scheme consisting the colours of white and browns which would separate it from many other magazines on the shelf as it is an unusual set of colours to use. The portrait style picture used of Beyonce creates immediate eye contact with the reader drawing their attention the the front cover opposed to a picture which may have been taken in a profile style showing only the side of the artists face. Another thing that is typical of all magazines to do not just music ones, is having someone looking flawless on the cover. Beyonce has perfect skin, although it has been edited it looks perfect. However if the picture had not been edited and we had seen some of her natural flaws this may prevent people from purchasing the magazine.

Magazine covers- Mood Board
I created a mood board on pinterest about all of the different artists I and themes I can put into my magazine. In order to get some inspiration for the layout of my magazine over I have created another mood board about this, I have added all types of magazine covers not just music ones in order to get an idea of all the different ways magazine covers can be set out, I am also looking at the ways in which the covers have used the typical conventions that magazines include, or how the have effectively changed them.

History of R&B
R and B stands for Rhythm and Blues, the African-American urban sound has evolved from blues and jazz. However R and B has been called a combination of different music types, including rocking and jazz with a heavy and insistent beat during the late 1940's. Due to the dace ability that R and B has it quickly because more and more popular. The first magazine to include R and B music was Billboard during the late 1940's.
R and B lyrics are relatable as they are about everyday life. Although the lyrics are about everyday life the songs are also about: work, sex and drinking. One of the first main R and B hits was by Paul Williams and His Hucklebuckers, the song that they recorded was called dirty boogie. At the time the song was punished it was thought to have been "raunchy" and "risqué" for its time.
At the time of the 1950's R and B was starting to be one of the main sounds of Rock and Roll.
Further on into the 1960's R and B music also started to include soul. As we then progress into the seventies more genres like disco and funk were added to the R and B category. R and B then progressed into being a definition for all types of genres including: soul, funk, rock and roll and pop music.
As R and Bs popularity continued to grow artists like Lebert, Keith Swear, Jodeci and BellBivDeVoe were taking the songs about love they were creating to a whole other level during the 90s. Now a days we have artists like Mariah Carey, who is known for her vocal harmonies and classic-soul. R and B continues to grow today with many different successful artists from Rihanna to Lil Wayne.

Mood Board
I order to get some ideas for what my magazine cover is going to look like I have created a mood board in order to express the different things that I want to include. When I'm stuck for ideas about what I want to add to my magazine next I will always have this mood board full of different ideas to look back at for inspiration. On the board I have included many different artists from Beyonce to 50 cent, my mood board is heavily influenced by R and B artists as I know that is the genre that I want my magazine to be. I have used Pinterest as I find the website easy to use and am able to create many different boards, so I will be able to have for for every different aspect of my magazine, like the different fonts, moods and colour schemes. The website also allows be to add or take away things from the boards as much as I want to.

How does Ideology effect the way Pop/Rock is conveyed
Ideology has many different meanings, however in music it is all about how music is being represented. We tend to associate certain things with different genres of music, for example when thinking about a pop magazine we would assume that is would be pink with a boy band on the front. Where as when thinking about a Rock magazine we would assume the complete apposite would be on the front, when thinking of rock the two colours that come into mind are read and black.
Rock Magazine:
The cover of Kerrang magazine fits into the criteria of what a typical rock magazine would look like. As I said above it has included both of the colours red and black which I personally think its typical of a rock magazine to. The main image is of a popular band, that are not looking pretty and smiling as that is not want the audience that purchase Kerrang would look for. This is also true for the four pictures down the side, they are not posed like a typical photo shoot would be. It is more 'depressed' in effect, which is also shown by the black used throughout the cover. The fact that the header of the magazine is smashed conveys the affects of the music and the way in which the base in the music due to the heavy metal that the music contains. Even the front of the writing is more sharp and straight showing how to the point the magazine is going to be.
Pop Magazine:
The cover of Top of The Pops is the opposite to Kerrang, this is due to the fact is contains all of the stereotypical features that come into mind when you think of a pop magazine. Like I said above the main colour that comes into mind when thinking about pop magazines is pink and that is one of the main colours that has been used on the cover. Another stereotype of pop magazines that has been used on this cover is using a popular boy band, they are also posed and looking 'pretty'. This has been done as they are one of the most popular bands at the minute which is what the readers of top of the pops are going to be interested in rendering, so by putting them on the cover it is going to increase the amount of sales that top of the pops will get. Other stereotype top of the pops is following in order to get move sales is using boys with six packs on the cover, by using 'attractive' looking males without tops on is also going to draw teenage girls into purchasing the magazine. The font of the magazine is a lot softer and more girly, with a swirls in certain letters.
Comparing the two magazines:
Both of the magazines draw in two different audiences that would have completely different music taste, with Kerrang appealing to teenagers that may be thought it be goths and into heavy metal music, and Top of The Pops appealing to teenage girls that are forever following their latest celebrity crazy on twitter. The layout of both of the magazine also show how they are different, with Kerrang having all of the headings places in straight lines around the cover so its easy to see exactly what the magazine is going to include. However Top of The Pops is almost like an organised mess as their is many different headings and pictures all around the magazine which shows just how much the magazine is going to include.

Bauer
History of Bauer:
Bauer media group first started in January in 1875, it is now one of Europe's leading media companies. Bauer is a family run company,so as soon as someone from the next generation is ready to start working for the company there will be a plan in place as to what there role in the company will be. This is an aspect that is unique to a company and is a factor in which contributes to the success of Bauer.Bauer's headquarters are set in Hamburg, Germany. Bauer originally started a as a small printing company house however there success grew and grew. There has been five generations through the company and it will continue due to how successful they are, Bauer comprises 300 magazines worldwide, TV shows and radio stations. The magazines include things like Kerrang and Q. Bauer also have there own radio station called 'Bauer Radio'. Bauer owns 50% of Box Television, the other 50% is own by channel 4, within box there are many other TV channels which are as follows:
- 4Music
- The Box

- Kerrang!
- Kiss
- Magic
- Smash Hits
Q Magazine:
From the statistics that the NRS have found it shows that 319 people read the magazine. With 167 of those people being aged between 15-34 and 153 aged 35+. The NRS have also found how many women and men are reading the magazine, which shows that more men read the magazine at 243 and only 77 women are reading it. Another static at that is the class of people, with ABC1 being the most wealthy people and C2DE being the working class. There is 237 people that are part of the ABC1 class that read Q and 83 that are part of the C2DE, which shows that the dominant class of people that read Q are the ABC1.
MOJO:
Again in order to find out what sort of audience Mojo has I will be using NRS statistics. Compared to Q mojo has a smaller audience as they have 201 readers. Another difference between Qs and Mojo's audience is that Mojo has a larger audience aged 35+ with 122, that then leaves only 80 aged between 80. However like Q magazine there were more male readers then female, with there being 150 male and 51 female. Another similarity Q and Mojo have with their readers is the class, as like Q the dominant class is ABC1 with 128 readers. The C2DE class only has 73 readers which shows the dominant class there are reading the magazine are the ABC1 class.NRS: National Readership Survey:
As I said above I got my static's from the NRS (National Readership Survey). The company was first founded in 1956, it is now providing most important and valued research as to what is being used in todays media. The surveys that are done but the NRS cover over 250 of Britain's largest newspaper brands and magazines. The survey shows the size and the type of audience that the magazine has, which allows the magazine to see what sort of content they should be including. Although the NRS finds out important information for magazines there is also many positives and negatives to the company, these are as follows:Positives:
- It shows the magazine what audience it is getting, which allows the magazine to include contact that is going to appeal to that audience.
- The statics will allow the magazine to see what the post popular covers of the magazine have been and what they did on that cover.
- Advertisement are something that magazines are used a lot for, the magazine is going to include advertisements that will appeal to the audience.
- Age appropriate, if the magazine has a lot of younger readers they will not include content that will not interest them at all, likewise if there is an older audience there is not going to be childish things included.
- A history of all statics is kept, which will allow the magazine to see the growing success of the magazine, and how much more of an audience they are gaining as they continue to publish, or if the magazine is no longer getting a large enough audience and they magazine need to make changed to what they are doing.
Negatives:
- Due to the amount of people that purchase magazines on a daily bases all of NRS statics are estimates, which means they aren't 100% reliable.
- When one person purchases a magazine there are multiple people rendering that same magazine of both genders, meaning that the NRS also has to estimates the statics for that.
- Due to my point above the statics do not add up.
- The statics show who purchased the magazine but not why or what they though of it, they may have picked it up by accident or for someone else.
- Parents may be purchasing the magazine for their son or daughter meaning that the statistics the NRS have for age range and gender are going to be incorrect.

History of Billboard Magazine
Billboard is a magazine that publishes on a weekly bases. It is an american magazine with its head quarters based in New York city. The two founders of the music magazine are William H. Donaldson and James Hennegan, with the first publish of the magazine on the 1st of November 1894.
Before Billboard became a music magazine in 1960s, it originally was a magazine that was focused on bill posting, it is now one of the oldest trade union magazines in the world.
The magazine was first founded on the 1st of November in Cincinnati. Like said above the magazine was first known for bill posting with the name Billboard Advertising. The content of the magazine changed three times over the years, it first included outdoor amusements and major consumer of billboard space. The magazine then went on to be the magazine known for publishing about circuses, carnivals, amusement parks and many more. We then got to the stage that the we are at know with what the magazine includes as the magazine when on to include motion pictures in 1909 and radio during the 1920s. The first publish that was about music was in 1913, the magazine included the best cellars charts and top songs which were in the vaudeville theatres. However this was yet to be a regular chart. During the 1930s the jukebox industry was being to develop so this influenced Billboard to being including the music charts in their magazine.
Genres: Billboard included three genres which were: Pop, Rhythm & Blues and Country & Western.
During the 1950s new sections were introduced into the magazine, these sections included the chart ratings for TV programs, as billboard has now started to cover the TV industry. However the magazine was still including all of the sections that it was before like the news of fairs and carnivals etc. However during 1961 all of these departments created their own magazine called Amusement, also things were progressing at the time so what was being shown on TV became a different publication.
Once again Billboard changed its name, during 1961 it was again re named to Billboard Music Week. This is the point at which the magazine became solely about music, with it still covering things entertainment machines like jukeboxes and things that are coin operated like vending machines. For the final time Billboard changed it name to Billboard which it then kept in 1963. There was also a web site created which then provided coverage of all formed of digital and mobile internet.
The magazine took its content out of billboard and started its own magazine, Amusement Business carried on for a few years after. However at the begging of 2000 the magazine started to struggle. The magazine then cut down the amount of times that it published to monthly, however during May 2006 it increased once again.
Radio station started to play the 'Billboard Hot 100 chart', this continued for many years. However some of the radio stations that were using Billboard stopped meaning the magazine was no longer being used.
Although Billboard is a magazine they also have their own awards called the 'Billboard Music Awards'. The were held annually in December however they slowed down in 2007 but then started again in May 2011.
