In pervious time periods social identify was something that was strongly recognised, it was easy to be able to see the type of music that someone listened to due to what they were wearing. The type of music that you listened to also determined the type of social group that you belonged to, everyone knew what you were into and certain groups where juged or hated due others to their music interests. However this is no longer dominant now a days and music has become a lot more diverse, however we still have some stereotypes.
Stereotypes:
- Hippies- They are seen to be always funky colours like purples, with massive glasses on. They are seen to be wearing a peace sign or have one in their Volkswagen.
- Skinheads- These are seen to always be wearing dc martins with braces on, thigh jeans and a fitted white top.
- Mods- Around during the 60s they were called the modernists as they listened to modern Jazz. They would always be seen driving moto scooters.
- Gangsters- Gangsters were stereotypes to listen to R and B music, they were always thought to be involved in crime and went around in large gangs.
- Emos/Goths- This is one of the only types of stereotypes that is strongly dominant today, they are seen to listen to Rock and heavy metal. Like the picture above they have died red or jet black hair, and wear black clothes a lot of the time.
- Fangirls- Associated with pop these are usually teenage girls that go mad for certain bands or people. They go crazy for the artists that they love on social media and at concerts.
From the stereotypes mentioned above Emos/Goths are still dominant today as however they do not go to he extremes that people have done in pervious years, like beating someone up due to them not liking the same music tastes. Fangirls have come abut more now a days due to social media growing and growing. Gangsters are still around however it depends in the area that you are in as they would not be in all areas like fangirls are.
